Charles P. Cantrell

Born February 13, 1874, in Smithville, TN, Cantrell entered service in Nashville.

Cantrell fought in the Spanish-American War and on July 1, 1898, in the famous Battle of San Juan Hill, "gallantly assisted in the rescue of the wounded from in front of the lines and under heavy fire from the enemy." He died August 3, 1948, and is buried in Nashville National Cemetery.

Medal of Honor recipient Cantrell's father was Lieutenant Abraham Cantrell of the Confederate 23rd Tennessee Infantry.
