Accredited to Kentucky, Morris was born in Stewart County, TN.
Morris was one of seven men who received the Medal of Honor for their service in defending the "Lyman Train" against a war party of Kiowa and Commanche at Upper Washita, TX, on September 9–11, 1874. The supply train was attacked by a large Indian war party. The cavalry assigned to defend the train fiercely resisted the much larger numbers of attackers, enduring constant gunfire and two major assaults by over 400 warriors. Temperatures soared to 100 degrees, and water was scarse. Still, the defenders held out for almost a week until help arrived.
